University of Kansas Association for Water and the Environment (AWE)

The Association for Water and the Environment is a student chapter of both the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation in the state of Kansas. The group provides professional development in water and wastewater engineering and science. AWE hosts guest speakers from water industries, participates in community outreach activities, and tours water and wastewater treatment plants.

The student chapter was formed in November 2011. AWE received its student charter from WEF in the Spring of 2012 and its charter from AWWA in the Fall of 2014. Dr. Sturm helped found the student group and has continuously served as the advisor.

Research Experience for Teachers (RET) is a program funded by the National Science Foundation that provides research opportunities for K-12 educators. A major goal of this program is to encourage its participants to incorporate the skills they acquired from the program into their class curriculum.
